Water Safety

WATER SAFETY 2013

As part of our preparations for EOTC week we have been learning about keeping safe in water. We have learnt that it is extremely important to keep as warm as possible if we find ourselves in the water unexpectedly for a long time to avoid  HYPOTHERMIA  settling in. We went to the Millenium Institute to practice some Water Safety survival  skills. We practiced the 'Huddle' technique putting the smallest person in the middle of our hugging circle, how to get people back onto a boat if tipped out and towing a person back to shore using the 'life saving technique.'

What part of our session did you enjoy the most? What new learnings have you made?

  1. The part I enjoyed the most was the scuba diving because we got to fall back off the boat. I learnt how to do the safety position that helped you to breathe and the huddle position. This helps you to survive out in the ocean because it keeps everybody warm and safe.

  5. At water safety last week I loved it when we had to fall backwards off the boat. It got my adrenaline pumping because the water was cold. I learnt how to huddle for warmth and it was really fun because I was the one in the middle.
